Fees and options
Your application cost depends on applicant's age, whether you want a standard passport book and/or card, and how urgently you need them. Some fees are payable to the State Department, while some are paid to the library. Separate payments are required.

Bring a photo
You must bring your own photo to submit along with your application. For full details, see the U.S. Department of State Photo Guidelines. Photos not meeting these criteria will be rejected, causing delays in the processing of your application.
Basics
- Submit a color photo, taken in last 6 months
- Use a clear image of your face. Do not use filters commonly used on social media.
- Have someone else take your photo. No selfies.
- Take off your eyeglasses for your photo.
- Use a plain white or off-white background*
* Digitally removing the background or altering color/lighting is not acceptable. Photos should be untouched (other than cropping for correct image dimensions.)
Photo tip: Photo should be 2"x2" (51 x 51 mm) with the head centered and sized between 1" and 1.4" (25 and 35 mm).
About drug store passport photos
Many nearby drug stores and shipping stores (CVS, UPS Store, etc.) offer passport photo services. Contact those stores for current information.
However, staff at drug stores and similar places advertising passport photos may not be trained in the requirements of passport photo quality, pose, position, and lighting. It's up to you to review the photos and verify they meet precise requirements.
Please familiarize yourself with photos that do and don't meet the U.S. State Department's standards using their online Photo Tool, which shows examples of acceptable and unacceptable photos. For example, only one of the images below would be accepted as a passport photo, while the others would be rejected.
